Walk The Moon and Jany Green Land The Dream Plane Tour In DC
Date: September 24th, 2021
Venue: 9:30 Club
Washington, DC
What’s up everyone, it’s Derek here! I’m back again with another night of music in Washington, DC, and what a night it was! It was a true joy to be back at one of the most well-known music venues on the east coast. I am of course talking about the 9:30 Club. On this night, in particular, fans were eager to have a good time and they were in luck because inside were two acts ready to party all night. So after waiting in a line that wrapped around the corner and down the block, Jany Green and Walk The Moon were ready to welcome us in and allow our worries to be left at the door.
Kicking off this epic night of music was Jany Green. Originally from Alaska, Jany Green is a breath of fresh air filled with energy and positivity. As soon as he and his band took to the stage, they immediately gave it all to DC and the crowd returned it in full. Providing funky grooves that bounced throughout the room and everyone within it, it wasn’t long before we were all dancing and bopping along.
Celebrating the release of his debut album Lost in Love that dropped back in August, we got treated to many of the new hits. One of those being “Magic,” a song that instantly creates a vibe and gets everybody jamming out and jumping up and down. Following that, we got introduced to the band, with Ralph on bass, Omar on guitar, and John on drums, and they all came to bring the party.
Closing out their set they hit us with one of their biggest songs at the moment with “Little.” As the audience raised their hands into the air and formed hearts, it was clear that Jany Green had instantly become a fan favorite. This was made even more clear following the show as many posted on social media claiming that Jany Green was their new favorite artist. So make sure you give him a follow and stay up to date on the latest hits he’s dropping because he’ll surely be appearing on your newsfeed and playlists more in the future.
Following a quick set change, the stage was set for more music and dancing. As the lights dropped and the crowd roared, Walk The Moon walked on stage. We were instantly transported to “Portugal” and the energy skyrocketed. The fans were loving it and fully involved in singing and dancing along even more so when the song “Different Colors” began and the room filled with a rainbow of colors and smiles. It was then time to break out some of the new songs, most of which have been released over this summer beginning with “Giants” and followed by a personal favorite of mine “Fire In Your House, the latter being a song that has been on repeat for me ever since hearing it. The recorded studio version features the late Johnny Clegg and his son Jesse and holds true to their musical styling which gives me a sense of nostalgia wrapped up in a modern hit. The room filled with red light, which is appropriate for a song about arson, while we got treated to a killer guitar solo and some strong synth vibes.
After pulsating drums accompanied “Tightrope” it was time to slow it down a bit with an acoustic performance of “Kamikaze” as lead singer Nicholas Petricca took his place at the keys. A light then illuminated him from the floor in front of him, casting a shadow on the white backdrop. Throughout the song, fans sang along and filled in background vocals as well. Shortly after, guitarist Eli Maiman returned to the stage to bring to life an acoustic version of “Aquaman.”
The evening of fun continued with the most amazing synchronized crowd dancing as part of the song “I Can Lift A Car” as hands pumped up and down and swayed side to side. Then the dance moves kicked into high gear as the insanely popular “Shut Up and Dance” began to play. The party was in full motion and to rock out with DC they closed out their set with “Headphones” which gave a grunge rock vibe as lights strobed and the sounds rocked the house.
After leaving the stage, the crowd was cheering in anticipation of an encore and it wasn’t long before they got their wish. Nick and the band returned to the stage, but then quickly ran off stage to grab a bottle of champagne. Why? Because on this very evening there was cause for true celebration as “Shut Up and Dance” had just crossed 1 Billion streams! They toasted each other before doing what any celebratory moment calls for… playing a ballad. Haha. “Tiger Teeth” may have been a slower song but the crowd didn’t miss a beat. Then in true celebratory fashion, it was time to go crazy and party. “Anna Sun” created a moment where the audience immediately began to jump up and down as the first note hit and truly closed the night on a high.
