Vibe Check: Papadosio Bring The Groove to Cohab Space
Unique Sounds In A Unique Space
As every genre does, the jam scene has evolved. While it can be easy for outsiders of the jam music scene to equate many of the stereotypes to the entire genre, in truth the scene has grown to encompass a tremendous amount of variety in what you can expect to find if you just take some time and listen. One example of this genre-bending approach can be found in a band like Papadosio, who have helped define a sub-genre in the jam world known as Jamtronica which has become a prevalent sound in the scene over the last 20-plus years. With an impressive discography established Papadosio recently released To Live A Making, and now have hit the road in support of that album doing what they love as they play for established fans and tour the country for the remainder of the year. Catching them at Cohab Space in High Point, North Carolina we were treated to an amazing venue, vibe, and a fantastic set from Papadosio.
Arriving early at the venue Cohab Space, we were treated to a festival-like vibe as vendors prepared and as hugs and smiles were distributed amongst friends greeting each other. A unique venue for sure, the interior of Cohab Space serves as a showroom, meeting, and working spaces during the weekdays and a wonderful outdoor venue has been established with lovely landscaping and comfortable seating and room to hang out and share in the music. In a city that has branded itself as a design center, it is amazing to see that reflected in the look and feel of Cohab Space. Getting the evening started, The Talismen brought the energy early. As the crowd weres still finding their way in The Talismen were catching the crowd’s attention and getting the dancing going with sounds of soulful funk, and just generally jamming through a set of originals and even squeezing in a Jimmy Buffet cover that has been stuck in my head now for days. The Talismen played a fun set and were a great way to get the event started.
Next up in the lineup was Push/Pull. Push/Pull is electronic musician Liam Collins and he carried us through a groove-packed DJ set mixing a world of sonic influences and really solidified the festival experience feeling of the evening as the sun had set. The stage lighting was kicking into overdrive and a couple of ladies were hula hooping with lit hula hoops on each side of the stage and the audience was dancing, cementing the vibe of the evening.
At this point in the evening, everyone was settled into Cohab Space. Having grabbed a table, maybe some food or a drink or two, the space in front of the stage was full as large fans and misters kept everyone cool, Cohab Space really knows how to create an amazing experience. A happy audience greeted Papdosio as they took the stage and from there, the band jumped right into their set. Accompanied by great lighting and of course some awesome video graphics playing behind the band, they tore through a set full of groove. The stage was full of instruments as the five-piece band uses a plethora of equipment in their electronically driven performance that mixes elements of progressive rock, jazz, jam, and of course electronica. The audience was vibing hard to the sounds and the space was full of music and smiles for the duration of their performance. I was so happy to make it out to this show and catch Papadosio for the first time but this was also the first time for me at this amazing venue.
Papadosio will be on the road the remainder of this year playing multiple festivals and venues, and if they find themselves near you, do yourself a favor and grab a ticket to catch their set.
