The Colors Experience With BTBAM In Charlotte

Band Sells Out 2 Nights at The Underground

Progressive metalcore band Between the Buried and Me is bringing a unique experience to fans on their 2024 tour. Putting a twist on the traditional greatest hits touring agenda, BTBAM is showcasing two of their albums on this tour,  2007’s Colors and 2021’s Colors II. The Colors Experience 2024 Tour has BTBAM playing two consecutive nights in each city, playing Colors on night one and Colors II on night two. The tour is selling out everywhere and many fans have gotten tickets to both nights in order to fully immerse themselves in this one-of-a-kind adventure. Shutter 16 had the opportunity to catch night two and find out what The Colors Experience was all about.

The Underground Charlotte was already jam-packed with fans upon arrival at the venue, many of whom were chatting about the previous night’s show and looking forward to another night of fantastic music courtesy of BTBAM.

The Acacia Strain 5

Opening the show was a little deathcore band known as The Acacia Strain, a personal favorite. Led by vocalist Vincent Bennett, the band came out in full force, taking charge of the night’s festivities and getting the crowd amped up from the very first note.

The Acacia Strain 2

The stage was washed with dark, blue lights as the band blasted into three songs from their 2023 release Failure Will Follow. I believe this show marked the live debut of all three songs which are all over 10 minutes in length with “bog walker” clocking in at just over 17. Things were off to a powerful start with a great doom and sludge vibe going on. Drummer Matt Guglielmo was fierce behind the kit and Bennett’s vocals were as good as I’ve ever heard from him in the live setting. This was a perfect way to get the evening started and I think everyone in the room would agree that The Acacia Strain crushed it.

After a short break, it was finally time for the moment we had all been waiting for. BTBAM took the stage in almost complete darkness. As deep, red lights barely illuminated the members, our Colors II journey would begin.  Lead vocalist and keyboardist Tommy Giles Rogers was situated front and center behind his keyboard. The stage fog was so thick, he was barely visible as the band kicked into “Monochrome.”

BTBAM 3

Tommy sounded amazing from the first note of the set to the last as he captivated us, drawing us into each and every song. The set featured dramatic lighting changes throughout the night. One moment guitarist Paul Waggoner was practically invisible and the next lit up with a huge burst of brilliant white light as he stepped up onto the barricade and let it rip.

BTBAM 9

One of the best things about a BTBAM live show is the band’s ability to take you through all the highs and lows of the music as if we were one. One moment you are in a total vibe as the proggy keyboards runs envelop you and another moment you are jumping around moshing in the pit as the guitars scream. There’s simply no other band quite like BTBAM in that respect and on this particular night, they were on fire.

BTBAM 13

Blake Richardson was hidden behind his kit and although he wasn’t too visible, his presence could be clearly felt. He brought the thunder, at times so hard it felt like my heart would burst right out of my chest cavity. Guitarist Dustie Waring stayed low key in the back except for a short time that brought him out to shred in the front and Dan Briggs stayed behind his keyboard setup, alternating between keys and bass depending on the song.

BTBAM 5

Giles was a commanding presence whether nestled behind his keys in the darkness or reaching out to touch fans’ hands at the edge of the stage. This was almost a hometown show for BTBAM and both Giles and Waggoner were in their element as the journey through Colors II continued on.

The crowd was at times mesmerized by the contrast of the band and the extremes of music we heard. People were dancing,  swaying, moshing, and crowd-surfing in droves as the fans and BTBAM worked together, creating a unification of musical souls. The band was giving every ounce of energy they had and the crowd was giving it right back to them.

As the end drew near, I found myself a bit saddened that I had missed night one in Charlotte and wondering why it had been so long since I let BTBAM take me to new heights. This is a tour that you absolutely should not miss. The Colors Experience 2024 is a tour like no other. Check it out for yourself when BTBAM rolls through your town.
