Tessa Violet, Will Joseph Cook, and DaysorMay bring the Rise of The Phoenix tour to The Foundry

By: Angel Park

Tessa Violet brought a captivating, fun performance to The Foundry this past Monday at the Foundry in Philadelphia. Supported by fellow artists Will Joseph Cook and DaysorMay, this show marked the final round of North American shows for Violet’s ongoing Rise of The Phoenix tour.

Tessa first landed on the radar of quirky indie-pop genre enthusiasts back in 2014 with her debut studio album titled, Maybe Trapped Mostly Troubled. This release marked the first musical endeavor that she had released to the public, and despite the minor media attention it received, charted at number 10 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.  By 2019, Tessa released her latest EP, Bad Ideas, which featured the singles, “Crush,” “Bad Ideas,” and “I like (The Idea) Of You.” Both critics and fans have praised her minimal but enthralling beats and song themes. For her live show in Philly, she carried that same energy with her through her witty humor, bold stage presence, and rapport with her loyal audience.

Prior to Tessa’s performance, that evening were openers DaysorMay and Will Joseph Cook. The event kicked off first with DaysOrMay, an alternative group based out of BC, Canada. The performance was composed of a mixture of light indie grooves, soft vocals, and catchy crowd favorites such as “Ego,” “Just Existing,” and “25.”

Following DaysorMay was solo artist Will Joseph Cook. Will Joseph Cook is an Australian singer-songwriter who released his first EP in 2011. Similarly to Tessa, he started his career as a YouTube personality, but he soon transitioned to producing his own songs, releasing three albums, the most recent titled Every Single Thing. Memorable tracks from his set included “Be Around Me,” “Little Miss,” and his collaborative single with Tessa called, “Gummy.”

Finally, it was a little after 9 PM when the house lights went down for Tessa to take the stage. In true quirky fashion, the entrance song of choice for Tessa was the Spongebob theme song, which the packed crowd sang along with loudly as she walked in front of them, decked out in a bold red dress with her signature logo illuminated behind her. She was quick to thank the crowd for coming and poked fun at her recent loss of voice. Despite this setback, Tessa had no issue reeling the crowd in with an enthusiastic and varied set that featured a wide range of her releases, including “Crush,” “Bad Ideas,” and “Games.”
