Tei Shi Mesmerizes at Tour Opener in Boston
The Valerie Tour – A Celebration of Independence and Identity
Singer and producer Tei Shi embarked on her next journey as an artist, releasing her first album and playing her first string of shows since 2019. The multifaceted artist, born Valerie Teicher, has never had difficulty seamlessly blending genres, creating a distinctive and captivating sound with her newest project. Hailing from Buenos Aires, Argentina, her identity lies in her ethereal vocals, experimental production, and captivating stage presence. After a realization in 2020 that her record label was stifling her ability to create, she risked her career by deciding to leave her label, spending the next three and a half years crafting her first fully independent project– Valerie. The 2024 release marks a pivotal moment in her growth as a confident and self-assured artist.
Kicking off the opening night of the first leg of her Valerie Tour, Tei Shi brought her unique sound to The Sinclair in Cambridge, MA, just outside of Boston. Inside the intimate, standing-room venue stood a small, but loyal audience, many of whom had been eagerly awaiting her return to the music scene for over 4 years. When the lights of the venue finally dimmed and ethereal synthesizers began to play, the group packed in close to the stage, as Tei Shi appeared. Immediately showcasing her sweet and airy vocals, highlighted by dreamy reverb effects, the singer paid homage to her roots with a song from her new album in Spanish. The bilingual singer smoothly traded between each language throughout the night, impressing the audience with her lyricism in multiple dialects.
Speaking to the crowd, Teicher clearly showed signs of nervousness, which she admitted towards the middle of her set, which made her all the more personable as a performer. She demonstrated a level of authenticity and connection with the audience akin to the identity she has come into after taking back control of her career. Multiple times throughout the show, she expressed her deep gratitude to be back on stage performing again after her hiatus, a sentiment that clearly resonated with her devoted fans.
With a minimal on-stage setup featuring just a few LED lights, a laptop running her backing tracks, and a microphone, Tei Shi didn’t need any flashy gimmicks to demand attention at her Boston show. Even considering her nerves, her airy vocals, captivating dance moves, and on-stage charisma charmed the audience and made for a memorable night.
Make sure to catch Tei Shi on her Valerie tour for the rest of May!
