Tania Elizabeth Delights Fiddle Fans at Neighborhood Theatre
Canadian Fiddler Plays an Intimate Show at NODA landmark
The Avett Brothers are arguably one of the biggest and most successful musical acts to hail from the Carolinas. Their unique blend of folk-rock has delighted audiences everywhere since the band’s inception in 2000. In advance of their big New Year’s Eve show at Bojangles Coliseum, fiddle player and member of their touring band, Tania Elizabeth, made a stop at the Neighborhood Theatre for an intimate evening of musical adventures.
Tania’s background goes well beyond her years with The Avett Brothers. The talented violinist has been a professional musician since her teens and is a founding member of the Canadian folk fusion band The Duhks. She is a Juno Award winner and Grammy nominee and has released several solo albums in addition to her other bodies of works. This evening, Elizabeth treated Charlotte area fans to an up close and personal concert that all would remember.
Opening the show was area musician Emanuel Wynter. Wynter is a talented violinist, singer, and songwriter who has been making his mark in the North Carolina music scene. Wynter put on a solid set showcasing his abilities with emotional songs like “Cosmos” and “Iced Coffee” that resonated with the fans, pulling at your heartstrings and then putting a smile on your face. Wynter will be sharing new music in 2023. If you’d like to hear what he’s all about, he will be playing at The Evening Muse in Charlotte on February 9th.
The crowd was so excited to see Tania Elizabeth make her way to the stage because they knew it was going to be a special night. After tuning up, Tania thanked everyone for coming and said that it was the first time she saw her name up on the marquee and that it was pretty neat. Her set was a mix of her solo songs, songs from The Duhks, and some interesting cover songs. What I discovered early on was her beautiful voice which carried across the venue with simplicity and ease, something that’s hard to tell when she’s playing in a full band situation.
Tania accompanied many of her songs with an acoustic guitar which she admitted that she didn’t play enough as she wove stories in between songs, giving the audience a chance to react and connect. Don’t worry, she brought her fiddle! In fact, she brought several and when she placed that instrument under her chin, it was pure magic. Tania has a very expressive way of playing, taking you on a musical ride with all the ups and downs that go along with it. One minute you are swaying along to a passionate ballad and the next you are tapping your toes and stomping your feet.
Tania was also a terrific storyteller as she talked about growing up on Vancouver Island and getting started busking on the streets. She also told us how lucky she was to be in the midst of such a supportive and wonderful fiddle community and how much that helped her grow as a musician. Ever humble, she told us that it was still surreal to her anytime she would get a call from one of The Avett Brothers and talked about a time that Scott Avett had called to let her know that he wanted her to sing harmonies with him on a new song.
After an almost two-hour set, the evening would come to a close but not without Tania gifting us just a little more fiddle before we had to go. What a night! I always love seeing artists in this kind of setting. It gives you a chance to experience their music in ways that you never have before. I can’t wait until next time.
