Staind and Breaking Benjamin with Special Friends at Coastal Credit Union Music Park
A heartfelt family occasion – One to not miss
Photos by Luke Jamroz
To celebrate the ending of the summer concert season we join rock goliaths Staind and Breaking Benjamin, on their co-headline tour, at Coastal Credit Union Music Park in Raleigh, NC on Saturday. The open-air amphitheater venue itself is a beautiful landscape to view while enjoying a favorite show along with 19,980 guests.
Tonight’s openers Lakeview have had a big week. The country-rock duo, Jesse Denaro and Luke Healy, released their self-titled debut album via Snakefarm.
In conjunction with a brand-new music video for ‘Wrong Side of the Track. Their live show features heavy drums, rocking guitar, and lyrics based on classic country-style heartbreak songs. Their energy was infectious and made them the perfect opener for the tour. It was amazing to see even the fans who didn’t know them immediately start rocking out.
If you’re lucky, you can catch them headlining in November and December across Europe and the UK, including a sold-out show in London, as well as dates in Manchester, Glasgow, and beyond. See the dates below.
Daughtry
Next up was our NC native Bada$$ Daughtry. Daughtry is fronted by namesake Chris Daughtry, who was a finalist on the fifth season of American Idol. Unlike what is most suggested Chris is not a solo act, but has a full amazing band on tour and albums with him always.
His album and songs though, are out of this world you’ve heard a song or two he’s penned and probably didn’t know. He’s worked with several other songwriters, such as Live’s Ed Kowalczyk, Seether’s Shaun Morgan, Goo Goo Dolls’s John Rzeznik, Fuel’s Carl Bell, 3 Doors Down’s Brad Arnold, Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas, SR-71’s Mitch Allan, Shinedown’s Brent Smith, Three Days Grace’s former vocalist Adam Gontier, and the former The Click Five singer Eric Dill, Theory of a Deadman’s Tyler Connolly, Lifehouse’s Jason Wade and Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger!
While there were little bumps in the road to open the set, soon Daughtry was all smiles and heartfelt poses for the fans. The set list was a mash of their hits and even some ballads to pull on the heartstrings even more.
“It’s Not Over,” the big hit of Journey’s “Separate/Worlds Apart,” and Deftones “Change (in the House of Flies),” flawlessly performed. The band’s energetic stage presence and array of lighting and fog plumes added to the stage fun.
Breaking Benjamin
The night rolled on with a heavy hitting show from Breaking Benjamin. When the curtain dropped and revealed quite the surprise Benjamin Burnley’s son Ben, also known as Cheech.
The dynamic duo of generations ripped through the set with fervor and conviction. There is still a boyish nervousness in Cheech which draws you in. I find it so beautiful to see the love of music passed down and we get to experience it as they joy and skill of it grow.
The crowd’s enthusiasm with singalongs, chants, and cheers every time there was a different song change. We were even treated to moments when Daughtry came on stage and performed “Breath,” with the band. We’ve seen the band so many times over the years and by far this was the best time yet!
Staind
The final act of the night, the iconic Staind. The 90s alternative hit wonders serenaded us with Aaron Lewis’s sultry raspy vocals. The show was at many times toned down to just you and the clear and loud beautiful vocals helped to bring you further into the song. The crowd was almost singing over Lewis as the night went on.
He would stand quietly light his next indulgence and proceed with the set. This is where some fans are lost on the simplicity of letting the music speak for itself.
They closed the night out with two of their most famous classics “It’s Been a W0They closed the night with two of their most famous classics: “It’s Been a While” and “Mudshovel” (my absolute favorite). “Mudshovel” is such a highly energetic song to end a show on.
There were so many different elements of nostalgia throughout the night, and in any real show, that is the high we chase. Until the next time – please try to see this concert, and if not this one, please attend at least one to close out the season and welcome the next!hile,” and “Mudshovel.” (my other favorite)
