Soften The Glare Return And Melt Some Faces.

Equipped with new music and some time for touring Soften The Glare are back.

“Comprised of members that have roots planted in seemingly different genres of music the three members have developed a sound that showcases each of their talents and creates a unique fusion that is supported through their stage presence and craft. Formed by members Ryan Martinie, Bon Lozaga, and Mitch Hull, the band has shown that no matter where their roots may lay, the desire to create and perform that they possess will find a way to bring life to a sound that is uniquely theirs.

The band clearly enjoys playing with each other and their joy on stage really supports the sound and finds its way out to the audience.”

These were my thoughts after the first time I had the opportunity to cover Soften The Glare for Shutter 16 Magazine back in 2017. After catching them that night in Lexington NC I knew that I would jump at the chance to see them live once again in the future if that chance presented itself, and it did. Now equipped with new music and a schedule of shows Soften The Glare has hit the road once again opening their tour at Yesterdays’ Music, a music equipment store in High Point North Carolina.

As far as their performance goes, not much has changed. This trio still throws down with ferocity and unmatched groove across their entire performance on stage and of course in their music. This performance was a real treat in an intimate venue with a surprising stage set up with all the bells and whistles providing a full experience in an unexpected space.

I had never visited Yesterday’s Music before so my initial thoughts were that they would simply make some room on the sales floor and the band would potentially perform a stripped down set. That was not the case. It was really cool to see a full stage performance from the band including stage lighting and even a fog machine in a space that fit no more than 50 people.

Speaking of the people, the show sold out shortly after announcement so as you can imagine everyone in attendance were fans and super eager to see the band perform. The room overall was full of friends, collaborators, and fans with a few traveling cross country from California to catch this intimate performance from a band they clearly love.

In the end it was a lovely evening of music that wrapped up with smiles, handshakes, and hugs as the band took time to converse and thank everyone in attendance posing for pictures and sharing in the joy. The band was quick to begin their set mentioning that this was the first show back for them in a while, hinting that they may be a little rusty.

If they were it was not evident to me or anyone in attendance this night and I cannot imagine them getting tighter over the next few performances but if they do be sure not to miss them as they play a few select shows over the next month and beyond.

Photographer Josh Gooch is a North Carolina native and a graduate of Appalachian State, Josh Gooch works in education, teaching graphic design at the community college level. Photography became a passion during his college career, and remained a constant addition to the ever-present soundtrack of life. Privileged to have turned an ear to hip-hop at a young age, after developing a love of music from ‘80s radio, Josh found that the revelation of rock music in high school was what led him to really devote serious amounts of attention to music. From there it was that first club show that sparked an addiction to live music and the exposure to various forms of it during the college years, cementing a love of passion and truth in music. Now, with the ability to combine the passions of photography and music, he hopes to continue to develop a creative voice that others appreciate.
