Senses Fail and Saves the Day bring their New Jersey VS The World tour to the Fillmore Charlotte

New Jersey VS Charlotte

Saves the Day and Senses Fail named their tour “New Jersey VS The World” and they were not lying. Fresh from a UK and Euro set of dates the band have been back rocking the US for a couple of weeks now and it was time for them to swing through Charlotte NC with a stop at The Fillmore Charlotte. This night they brought with them some outsiders as the opener in Texas band Narrow Head and the night was blast full of an audience belting their hearts out to tunes they clearly love.

Opening the night, Narrow Head took the stage and they were a band I was super excited to catch live.

Their most recent album Moments of Clarity was one of those albums that for me was a great listen the first couple of times.

I moved on and then came back and boom, it hit me differently and then fell into a much more regular rotation in my playlist.

Songs like “The Real” and “Flesh and Solitude” find just the right spot of guitar fuzz and heavy drumming with dreamy vocals that crescendo into a scream and really give me a vibe of so many bands that have made up my musical DNA over the years.

Of course, as the opener their set was short, but sweet.

We all were presented with just a taste of their sound, but I feel as if their set was a good mix of what they have to offer.

I look forward to getting to catch them again in the future with their own headlining set.

A packed house by this point, the Fillmore was full of fans that were not deterred by the rainy evening outside, or the looming Monday morning workday and the merch line was full of folks grabbing shirts, posters and whatever else they had across the massive selections.

The set break was pretty short, and it was time for Saves The Day to take the stage.

Bands like STD and Senses Fail have been at it now for many years and that offers a great opportunity for new fans and superfans to mingle in the crowd.

This was pretty obvious noting the age range of faces in the crowd and even a few kids in attendance with their parents for what may have been their first concert.

One thing about this genre of music is the emotional connection that fans can build with the songs and their love of the band and I can safely say that Saves The Day felt and fostered this connection.

During their set engaging with the crowd and even sharing a bouquet of roses with members in the audience.

It was wonderful witnessing the love across the room as fans belted out the words singing along as STD played and gave their fans exactly what they wanted.

During the next set break the house music kept the vibe going playing what seemed to be an “essentials” pop punk/emo playlist which honestly was one of the funnest set breaks I have ever seen.

The perfect set of songs to keep the audience active the crowd kept singing and vibing along with smiles across the room in preparation for Senses Fail. The crowd did not have to wait too long and in a flurry Senses Fail took the stage.

Singer Buddy Nielsen wasted no time taking the energy level to the max. It was a new level of energy in the room overall as the crowd got even more hype as crowd surfers and a pit emerged.

The band were very much on point and with a really interesting set of animations playing on the giant screen in the background moved through their set with lots of crowd interaction as Neilsen paused in between songs to crack jokes and encourage the pit to stay hype.

From a performance perspective Senses Fail put on a great show. The band as a whole appeared to be having a great time and the energy.

They fed the crowd was well received and returned in full.

The night had a really good almost wholesome feel. Saves The Day and Senses Fail have crafted a very authentic fanbase over the years and the crowd in attendance this night showed a real love for the music and a passion for these bands that was impressive to see and left me with a really positive feeling overall.

Photographer Josh Gooch is a North Carolina native and a graduate of Appalachian State, Josh Gooch works in education, teaching graphic design at the community college level. Photography became a passion during his college career, and remained a constant addition to the ever-present soundtrack of life. Privileged to have turned an ear to hip-hop at a young age, after developing a love of music from ‘80s radio, Josh found that the revelation of rock music in high school was what led him to really devote serious amounts of attention to music. From there it was that first club show that sparked an addiction to live music and the exposure to various forms of it during the college years, cementing a love of passion and truth in music. Now, with the ability to combine the passions of photography and music, he hopes to continue to develop a creative voice that others appreciate.
