Santa Takes On Krampus In Epic Metal Christmas Video
Shaun Mason and Mike Mocerino Gift Us With A Wonderfully, Horrific “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”
Christmas is right around the corner and the airwaves and playlists are full of traditional carols and holiday tunes. But if you’re a metalhead at heart and you’re looking for something a little different this Christmas, check out the brand new video from former Seas of Wake vocalist and guitarist Shaun Mason and Mike Mocerino.
This brilliantly done video, courtesy of Jesse Conti (Angel Vivaldi, Killswitch Engage), is really more of a short film than a music video. With a wicked blend of horror and Christmas, the clip pits the Santa, the traditional Jolly Old St. Nick versus the evil Krampus, a horned half-goat and half-demon creature that comes out at Christmas time to punish all the bad children. Opening with the sound of sleigh bells and an instrumental of the traditional song, Santa is busy at work magically coming down the chimney delivering gifts in front of a fully decorated tree and twinkling Christmas village. He even takes a nibble from the milk and cookies left out before him. But when he looks up, he can’t believe what he sees as Krampus is staring back at him and the holiday showdown of all showdowns begins. The special effects makeup is fantastic, done by Ashley Benjamin or Nightmare Barbie. Mason and Mocerino’s version of “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” is ridiculously good. They bring a hard, metal edge to the holiday tune but keep it recognizable and true to the original song in many ways. As the confrontation begins, Santa picks up an electric guitar that was one of the gifts and delivers a sizzling solo, white gloves and all. The scene reminded me of the devil versus Johnny in “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” and it seems Santa is pretty metal himself. A gruelly fight scene ensues complete with Krampus using a chain as a weapon and Santa stabbing Krampus with two candy canes. It’s horrific and humorous all at the same time. I won’t reveal the winner of the battle. You’ll have to watch the video to find and check that out for yourself. One thing for sure is Christmas and Santa will never be the same!
If you like what you see and hear, be sure to check out Shaun Mason and his solo album Our Vicious Cycle and stay tuned for more from Mike Mocerino who has been playing guitar for reggae artist En Young.
