Periphery wrap 2024 NA Spring Tour With Epic NYC Show
If Djent Is Not A Genre, What Is It?
Djenter’s Periphery along with Eidola and Periphery’s own Jake Bowen wrapped up the brief but powerful Wildfire North American Spring Tour Saturday night (May 18th) in NYC’s Palladium Time Square (Formerly Playstation Theater) with an electrifying night of groove and metal. Periphery released their latest offering Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre a little over a year ago and the band has had multiple tours in support of it, and of course while on the East Coast, the progressive metallers had to make a stop in the big apple.
Periphery’s own guitarist Jake Bowen kicked off the night with solo material, the first time he’s done it as an opener for his own band and the crowd was loving it. Jake’s blend of electronic instrumentals and heavy bass was a great warm-up for the night and gave Jake an opportunity to introduce himself as a musician to the band’s fanbase. The crowd enjoyed it and showed full support for the music. Jake even joked how his girlfriend was in attendance and had to wake up hearing these songs because he was practicing “Not Shitting Himself”, his words not mine haha.
Next up was Eidola, a progressive rock/metal band from Salt Lake City, Utah. The band was formed in 2011 and consists of some pretty impressive musicians, most notably multi-instrumentalist Andrew Wells also known for Dance Gavin Dance, and Royal Coda guitarist Sergio Medina who joined in late 2017.
Eidola released their fifth studio album Eviscerate back in April and are now out in support of the record. Eidola will also be headlining the Eviscerate Tour in June and July around the U.S., with support from Royal Coda, Wolf & Bear, and Sani Bronco. New York City was super excited to see them this round with Periphery. That’s for sure the crowd let out piercing screams as they made their way to the stage.
The band’s set kicked off around 8:15 pm and was filled with energy and insane musicianship, one example is guitarist Sergio Medina’s stunt of playing his guitar with his tongue, while holding the guitar with his teeth!!!! Something I can say I’ve never seen in my entire life. Impressed is an understatement.
The band ripped through a 10-song set that included crowd favorites like “God Takes Away Everything”, can we just take a minute to appreciate how metal that title is? As well as “Fistful of Hornets”, again metal as F*ck! Before closing out the set with “Mutual Fear” the band split the set almost evenly playing the albums Eviscerate and The Architect.
Make sure to catch Eidola this summer on their headliner if they’re coming to your town, check out the full list of tour dates HERE!
Next up was headliner’s Periphery, if you’ve ever been to a Periphery show you know it is a glorious experience of energy, musicianship, fun, and laughter. The band doesn’t take themselves too seriously and that plays a massive role in the fun, carefree, and uplifting energy of the live shows. This was no different.
Periphery hit the stage around 9:30 pm opening with their track ‘Ragnarok” off the album Periphery II. With those first notes the crowd erupted, fans from the middle of the floor were now on the front rails and bodies were coming over the railings at an almost constant pace of crowd surfers continued into the band’s second song of the set “Wildfire”.
Fans screamed along to every word with vocalist Spencer Sotelo, and guitarists Misha Mansoor and Mark Holcomb interacting with the crowd while standing on risers. Bright orange lights quickly switching to Pink and Blue illuminated the stage. The lighting at times is as chaotic as the crowd.
The band also delivered their final performance of the song “Wax Wings” and Drummer Matt Halpern and Guitarist Misha had their own little jam session halfway through. The band as always is just incredibly tight thanks in part to behind the scenes mastermind Alex Markides who has been with the crew for many years and has also worked with metal titans Killswitch Engage and Metallica to name a few.
The band has always taken their live show sound and visuals seriously with the same character and care as their album production. Periphery wrapped their 11-song set and their tour with the track “Blood Eagle”. We don’t know if this is the last North American tour of this album cycle but if it is they went out with a bang on this one delivering one hell of a memorable performance in the Big Apple.
