Incubus and Sublime With Rome Bring Summer Love to New Jersey
Incubus Summer Tour 2022
When you think of the summer concert season, if you’re like us you imagine a warm summer night under the stars with your best friends probably enjoying the sounds of an Incubus concert, am I right?
Well, I do and it’s something I’ve been lucky enough to experience over the course of many amazing and hot summers in my life. Friday night August 5th in Camden, NJ was no different, it was hot, it was filled with fun and laughter and most importantly it included music courtesy of Incubus and Sublime With Rome.
Fans made their way into the Freedom Mortgage Pavilion formerly known as BB&T. It was humid and the chance of severe weather threatened the evening but that didn’t stop fans from taking their seats both under the pavilion and on the lawn.
The show kicked off with the legendary Sublime W/Rome, arguably growing up these guys were the sound of summer, and live is the perfect setting. As the guys took the stage, Freedom Mortgage Pavilion filled with Marijuana smoke, and the smell circulated through the pavilion to get thousands of people stoned.
No worries though, weed is legal in New Jersey so the smoking of the good ole devil’s lettuce was 100% thanks to Governor Murphy and NJ State Law!
Sublime even like the old days brought the band puppy, this puppy was a huge Rottweiler and incredibly well behaved, I wonder what could have calmed him?
The band tore through crowd pleasers like “Smoke Two Joints”, “Doin’ Time” and “Wrong Way” with the crowd screaming the tracks word for word and the members of Sublime were all smiles because of it. Rome vocally delivers these songs less as his cover and more as a tribute, it’s clear the impact of the band and late vocalist Bradley James Nowell who the sets are also dedicated too.
Sublime with Rome wrapped up the 11-song setlist on a high note with Santeria before thanking the crowd and Incubus for a wonderful evening.
The night’s headliner Incubus led by vocalist Brandon Boyd took the stage, the whole back of the stage lined by screens that would play everything from graphics to the band on stage to the crowd.
Incubus also had an incredibly special VIP experience available for fans which saw a dozen or so fans on each side of the stage enjoying a side stage view of the performance. Incubus kicked off the set with “Nice To Know You” and right from the start that signature vocal carry and overall band tightness was present.
No matter how many times I attend an Incubus show, I’m always amazed by the performance quality, the unmatched ability of this band to bring these songs seamlessly from record to live performance is just downright impressive.
Brandon Boyd and company moved beautifully from ballads like “Wish You Were Here” to the more aggressive “Anna Molly” and “Megalomaniac” not an easy move for a lot of bands but the fans seem to transition quite well also one minute singing along and the next crowd surfing from the pit over the barricade.
The guys played an incredibly diverse set even including a cover of Lenny Kravitz’s “It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over”. The show gave songs heavily from albums like Morning View, Make Yourself, and a couple each off of A Crow Left Of The Murder and Light Grenades.
Fans were treated to a live version of “The Warmth” before Incubus closed out the night with their smash hit and only live track from their S.C.I.E.N.C.E album. Once again Incubus brought a beautiful summer evening of music to the Garden State and we survived with no rain till the very end of the show.
