Getting Salty & Sweet with aespa in Charlotte

K-pop Sensations Bring SYNK: Parallel Line Tour To Spectrum Center

It was all Pink Hoodies as K-pop all-girl group aespa stopped in the Queen City as part of their SYNK: Parallel Line Tour. The group first made a splash in the K-pop scene back in 2020 with their single “Black Mamba” and haven’t slowed down yet. The momentum around aespa keeps building selling over a million copies of their Girls EP in 2022 and just last year winning Song of the Year at the MAMA Awards for their hit single “Supernova.” Last fall, aespa got their first top-ten hit on the Billboard Global 200 with the title track from their latest EP Whiplash.

The group is currently out on tour and hit up Spectrum Center in Charlotte to bring a K-pop show for the ages to a capacity crowd of fans. There is no opening act on the tour, so when the lights went down across the venue, the level of excitement at Spectrum Center was palpable as fans screamed and held up small aespa light up wands creating a wonderful, welcoming glow to get the evening started.

This was my first K-pop show and I had no idea what to expect and was more than pleasantly surprised as the night went on. Karina, Giselle, Winter, and Ningning made their way out onto the stage as the middle doors opened up to reveal them. Dressed in all white, aespa appeared to come out of the clouds due to all the stage fog rising up around them.

From that point on, the show was all action all the time. There were scenery changes from the giant LED screen including a backdrop of Pokemon characters later in the show and a bevy of special lighting effects and confetti. There were plenty of costume changes as well including the famous “Pink Hoodie” much to the delight of the crowd.

The concert was broken up into smaller segments which were introduced by a short video clip before the band came out. I have to admit aespa put on a fantastic show complete with a bevy of dancers and synchronized moves that were an important part of the overall performance. One of my favorite parts of the evening was during the solo segments which put the spotlight individual on Karina, Giselle, Winter, and Ningning as they each took a turn with a solo selection of their own.

Throughout the night, the crowd was all in, shouting, singing, dancing, and of course doing the ritual barking chants at various times. The atmosphere was very much like a party and fun was the theme of the evening

If you have never attended a K-pop show, I highly recommend it. Aespa did not disappoint.
