Flippin’ out with Flipturn
Sold-out at The Orange Peel
Summer arrived early in Asheville, NC last Sunday as the Florida-based band brought their 2024 Something More Tour to The Orange Peel. The city is well-known for its beautiful mountain views but when Flipturn came to town it felt like the coast was only one song away.
The line stretched for 3 buildings before wrapping around a corner, showcasing the band’s dedicated fan base. I first discovered Flipturn in 2017 with the release of their debut EP Heavy Colors, and I’ve been eagerly anticipating a live show ever since. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer, their music and stage presence will captivate you.
Richy Mitch and The Coal Miners (RMCM) opened the evening with a 9-song set, featuring crowd favorites like Sage and Lake Missoula. Their folk-inspired acoustic sound set the mood as fans streamed into the venue.
The energy peaked during their performance of Evergreen, the band’s viral hit from TikTok last year. By the way, It’s even better in person. RMCM finished with Lucerne, a beautiful song that highlights Mitch’s vocals and the crowd would roar after every belt.
Lead singer/songwriter Mitch Cutts, drummer Jakob Ervin, and lead guitarist Nic Haughn, all best friends, formed RMCM during their senior year of high school in Colorado Springs.
Now based in Bozeman, MT, the band operates their own recording studio and is excited to continue creating music under their independent label.
If you appreciate raw and authentic songwriting, RMCM is a must-listen. Catch them on tour with Flipturn for a few more dates before they head off on their next journey!
As Flipturn prepared to come out on stage, the venue went dark and a cinematic instrumental intro began. It was captivating, immersive, and had everyone on edge. After what felt like a brief eternity, the band finally appeared and fans went crazy.
A group of friends on the barricade had shirts that read “MILF: Man I Love Flipturn,” a sentiment that truly seemed like an understatement. The instrumental intro seamlessly transitioned into their widely acclaimed hit Churches.
As soon as the hook began, the energy in the room rose and after the first beat break, the whole venue shifted. When I say everyone was dancing, I mean everyone. People were jumping, waving their hands in the air, and singing every word.
The band has been making waves in the music scene since they formed in 2015, rehearsing their earliest works in Madeline Jarman’s (bassist) garage.
The rest of the band consists of Dillon Basse (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), Mitch Fountain (synth), and Devon VonBalson (drums).
They had already gained a considerable following prior to the release of their debut album “Shadowglow” in 2022, having performed at popular festivals like Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Shaky Knees, and Hangout Fest.
Their fan base grows day by day as they consistently sell out shows and add more dates to their ongoing tour.
As the night drew to a close, Flipturn maintained their energy. At one point Devon brought his drum kit to the barricade for an intimate solo, only to return to the stage with the drum over his head – a testament to his exceptional navigation skills.
Dillon also paid a visit but this time on the other side of the barricade where he sang with fans. The highlight of the evening for me was when the band allowed the audience to sing a portion of the lyrics to August by themselves.
In that moment of pure silence, all I could hear was the unified voices of a thousand people singing “August honey you were mine” and it gave me chills. Additionally, a few unreleased songs were performed but you’ll either have to wait for their official release or experience them firsthand at an upcoming show.
Couldn’t get a ticket? No worries, they’ll be back again this coming Sunday, April 14th!
