Exclusive Artist Interview: Migrant Motel

Alt-Pop Duo Takes Both the Mexican and American Music Scene By Storm

After studying together in college in Boston, Peruvian-American David Stewart Jr. and Mexican native Chava Ilizaliturri bonded over their similar musical tastes, and the duo known as Migrant Motel was born. The two friends were highly active in both the New England and New York scenes before heading west to explore more opportunities in sunny L.A. The pair relocated to Los Angeles performing at iconic venues The Whiskey A Go Go and the Viper Room before Chava decided to move back to Mexico.

Chava’s move would not mean the end for Migrant Motel but rather a new beginning as the band began to develop a presence both in Mexico and California, two very exciting but very different scenes. Working remotely and getting together to play gigs, Migrant Motel has become a driving force in both areas playing in different areas of Mexico as well as California, even landing a spot on Lollapalooza’s main stage in 2021.

Their modern alternative pop sound makes you feel right at home in a refreshing way. On the latest single “Shame” Migrant Motel takes a comical approach as they wonder when the rest of the world will notice their talent. The song is upbeat with bouncing rhythms and plenty of pop-culture references.

Shutter 16 had the opportunity to chat with both David and Chava to get the inside scoop on “Shame” and what they have planned for 2023 and beyond. Click on the link below and explore a little of Migrant Motel for yourself.
