BoyWithUke Brings Lucid Dreams To Charlotte
Pop Singer Plays Sold-Out Show at The Fillmore
If you were looking for a fun-filled and action-packed concert to attend, chances are you made it out to The Fillmore last night to check out BoyWithUke. The singer is out on tour promoting his 2023 album Lucid Dreams and made a stop here in Charlotte performing to a sold-out crowd.
The crowd was lined up around the block as I arrived at the venue eagerly anticipating the show. There were a lot of younger fans in attendance and children with their parents and I spotted more than a few light-up BoyWithUke masks in the line. Once inside, the merch line was hopping and everyone seemed to want one of the light-blue beanies among other items up for sale.
Kicking off the night was a short set by singer Arden Jones who also happens to play the ukulele. Jones rose to fame by going viral on TikTok with his debut single “Parallel Parking.” He went on to release 9 EPs in 2022, one per February through October.
Tonight Jones was accompanied by a drummer who had his kit situated at the rear of the stage in front of some very cool Arden Jones graphics. The fans were ready to go and Jones obliged with a fun set, full of playful tunes as he interacted with the fans up front at the barricade and treated us to a little uke of course. If you haven’t heard of Jones and are a fan of BoyWithUke, check him out. I think you’ll like what you hear.
After a short break, it was time for the main event. The lights dimmed and soon we were in the middle of “Lucid Dreams” as BoyWithUke came out. Dressed in a hoodie with his signature lighted-eye mask, BoyWithUke was on fire.
The stage lighting was amazing with an everchanging array of spots and washes of color over the course of the evening. The LED screen at the rear of the stage would change as well, depicting different scenes which really helped to set the mood for each song. Saluting the crowd, uke held high in the air, BoyWithUke was amazing in every way.
After a few songs, it was finally time, and in a whirlwind moment that happened in a flash, he was unmasked, revealing his face to the crowd as people hotted and hollered, clapping and stomping in appreciation.
The whole show was fan-interactive and the audience was eating it up. At one point, BoyWithUke grabbed a fishing pole and snagged someone in the audience to join him up on stage. It was a nervous few minutes for young Elijah as he grabbed the microphone and let out a few cheers before clapping his hands and getting the crowd to help him sing a little bit of Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” What an amazing memory Elijah! I absolutely love it when artists give the fans such magical moments.
Throughout it all, BoyWithUke sounded fantastic. Whether he was singing, plinking the ukulele, or going full-out rockstar mode with an electric guitar, BoyWithUke put on a hell of a show. We even got a little acoustic segment with some unreleased tunes that were played for the first time and the tongue-in-cheek “Buy My Merch” during which he gave the appropriate shout out to his favorite member of the crew, the merch guy.
What a fun show! There are only a few dates left on this leg of the tour, but you can stay tuned to all things BoyWithUke here.
