Australia’s G Flip Tours America With A Sold Out Stop In D.C.

Their Latest Album ‘DRUMMER’ Comes To Life On Stage

G Flip

There are artists and then there are musicians. Georgia Flipo, better known as G Flip is a true musician through and through. Growing up in Australia they quickly took an interest in drums at just nine years old and now as they turn 30 they are showcasing that talent and admiration for the instrument in their latest album, appropriately named ‘DRUMMER’. What’s up everyone, Derek here with another wonderful night of music in our nation’s capital.

From the moment you hear their entrancing vocals, paired with a no-skip discography, you become immediately hooked and a fan for life. At least that’s been my experience. With music leaning to create alt-rock anthems mixed with auto-biographical, and occasionally vulnerable, topics there’s a diversity yet common thread throughout their music.

As D.C’s newest venue The Atlantis filled with adorning fans for a sold out evening of music the energy and love encompassed the space. Immediately there was a sense of welcome and support as the LGBTQIA+ community and allies were there in support of this incredible artist and each other. There are a few rules when it comes to attending a G Flip show, and they share them once the show begins but the main things to remember are look out for each other, if someone has a problem they will gladly stop the show to address and above all “don’t be a dickhead”.

As the set began, G Flip walked on stage to the cheers of a room filled with excitement as they sat down at their drum set alone on the stage and instantly transported us into their world and proved the power and skills held for the drum set. After an epic drum solo intro, their band took the stage taking their place on guitar and bass as “7 Days” kicked into gear.

G Flip then rose from their drum set and tagged in their bassist while the energy kicked into overdrive and ramped up with “Hyperfine”. Shortly after we were treated with a few of my personal favorites in the form of “Baked” and “Rough”. The latter complemented and made even more memorable by the addition of more drums on stage as G Flip and their band all played drums across the front of the stage.

Later in the show we all joined together to form a “gang cry” as we sang along at full volume to the latest single released with “Australia”. The night was full of memorable and incredible moments filled with pure talent and love such as that found in the striped back melody on piano of “Morning”, “2 Million” and “Waste of Space” but parallel to that was the high energy of songs like “GET ME OUTTA HERE”.

While going viral online has untimely led them to this point, it wasn’t their first time in DC as they previously acted as an opener next door at the iconic 9:30 Club and more recently found themselves as an invitee to Vice President Kamala Harris’ house party celebrating pride. While they thought the invite was meant for their partner Selling Sunset’s Chrishell Stause, it was actually for them as their music and impact in the community continues to grow. They were also the inspiration behind the song “Be Your Man“.

Before the night came to an end, they hit us with the wild vocals found in the encore’s “Your Lover” and after giving a stage worn shirt to a fan they noticed throughout the evening. To close out the evening they filled the room with rainbow colors as “GAY 4 ME” kicked into gear, complete with a little cover of Ginuwine’s “Pony”. A truly epic evening indeed.

Miki Ratsula

Along with G Flip on this tour is Miki Ratsula. This incredible being of a human just released their sophomore album ‘I’ll be fine if I want to’ and it features many of the songs we were treated to on this evening.

Throughout their set they shared their personal experiences with us in the form of spoken short stories but also through the songs they sang. With every note you could hear the genuine passion, truthfulness and vulnerability as they sang about their journey in life as a trans non-binary individual with songs like “jealous of my brother” and being misgendered at their own birthday party with “blue balloons“.

It’s hard to put into words but their presence on stage alone brought a sense of unity to the room as I looked around and felt nothing but support and love for this incredible artist and their beautiful songs.

Plus, anyone who can write an autobiographical song and title it “sims 3” is already a winner in my book. Their latest album will leave you completely entranced throughout, but truthfully so will all of their music. New and old.
