A New, Classical Experience.
An evening with Maestro Geoff Westley
It is always said that one should “step out of one’s comfort zone”. We all know that is not easy and I will say that for me, I do not do it enough. Although, almost always when I do decide to step out of my comfort zone it is rewarding. In this instance, my “comfort zone” would be a dive bar or slightly larger club and me in the pursuit of live music. In this instance “stepping out” was an enjoyable evening of classical piano in a wonderful and inviting space. To say that I am educated in what to expect from a classical piano performance would be a lie but recognizing passion and talent is something I believe that we all can see when we witness it no matter the feat. On this evening the talent and passion on display were from renowned pianist, arranger, composer, conductor, and music producer Maestro Geoff Westly.
As we arrived at the venue, Pandora’s Manor located in High Point NC, it was immediately apparent that we were heading into a unique experience. The performance, housed in an outdoor event space was beautifully decorated and when coupled with the hospitality of the organizers, set the stage for what was to be a genuinely lovely evening filled with joy and smiles. Shortly after guests had a moment to mingle and find their seating the evening began with an introduction of Mr. Westley from event organizer Lana Shkadova. Providing the audience with a brief overview of Mr. Westley’s credentials and with a quick thank you to the sponsors it was apparent that tonight’s performance was an important one and a hopeful step forward in expanding cultural activities in a city that is becoming much more than just the home of the High Point Furniture Market.
Greeting the audience Mr. Westley took a moment to elaborate on what his performance was to be about this evening. Discussing the improv aspect of his performance we learned a little history about the world of classical piano and in my opinion were set up nicely to appreciate the performance even more. Pausing in between performances to discuss a little bit of his career and telling us about the history of the music he was performing, the evening felt very personal and intimate to each audience member as we were swept into the music of each song. It was really nice to witness the reverence Mr. Westley has for his craft and the act of making music in general. Never pretentious, it was apparent that Mr. Westley simply enjoys performing, making music, and instilling a sense of joy and appreciation in everyone in attendance and it was also evident that the audience left with just that.
Closing out the evening Mr. Westley took the time to speak with eager attendees excited to share their appreciation for his performance and guests were invited into the main house, a functioning bed and breakfast, to continue discussing the music, evening, and general fellowship.
As mentioned before, this is not my typical evening out by any stretch. However, as a music lover, I am super glad that I took the opportunity to experience a musical performance that is atypical for me. It was not the first time that I have taken a chance like this on behalf of Shutter 16 Magazine and it will not be the last.
