Mother Tour hits the Queen City
Veil Of Maya and friends bring chaos to Charlotte on a Tuesday night
For fans of metal and hard rock in the Queen City of Charlotte North Carolina, there was nowhere else to be on this night other than the Avid Xchange Music Factory. Both club venues the Fillmore NC and the Underground had stacked lineups and I found myself at the Underground to check out Veil of Maya as their Mother tour came to town. Coming with them AngelMaker, Until I Wake, Reflections and Alluvial made for a long night of heavy music but an incredibly efficient evening of back-to-back acts.
Arriving at the music factory it was evident that the crowds were showing up in support this night and the whole complex was a buzz. It was great to see that even with an earlier start time for the show the fans had shown up and the night’s opening act, Alluvial, walked out to a packed house. The fans this night did not disappoint, and as Alluvial got started, so did the circle pit.
It was clear early on that the fans in attendance this evening were excited to be here and the moshing and crowd surfing that began during the opening set from Alluvial was just a sign of what was to come. The crowd participation continued through high-octane sets from Reflections and Until I Wake and I hope the bands were able to feel the love as the floor was packed from the front to the back and the energy was intense through each performance.
Each act truly delivered this evening but it was the final two that blew the roof off. The next band up, Angelmaker, took the stage at just the right time to a frenzied crowd. A unique band to say the least, their lineup of dual vocalists allows for a constant barrage that when teamed up with the rest of the band lets them build and maintain a wall of relentless sound.
The stage at the Fillmore Underground was just barely enough to contain them and it was not enough for the sea of crowd surfers making their way to the pit barriers. Security had their hands full keeping up with helping the surfers down safely and they did a great job, but their job was not over. The headliners for the evening Veil Of Maya were next and amazingly the intensity of the evening was about to hit a high mark.
With a slightly longer set break this time the crowd had a moment to catch their breath and it was needed. As the headliners, Veil Of Maya took the evening to a crescendo. With a sound that has evolved over the course of seven albums Veil of Maya have mastered brutal heaviness and have crafted a sense of melody within their music that has helped set them apart and offers a duality to their fans that was on full display both on stage and in the crowd.
From singing to screaming to growling the fans were there to not just witness but participate. Everything about the set from Veil Of Maya took the evening up a notch. Lighting, sound, and the performance were all completely on point and evidence of a band confident in their art.
For me, the excitement seen in the faces of the crowd and the bands was really a theme for this evening. It was a pleasure to be there to capture the bands this evening but the happiness and vibe of the whole evening was a great feeling to participate in. On a Tuesday night in February, the Queen City metal fans showed up and everyone involved did not disappoint.
