Old Dominion Brings Nothing But Good Vibes To Charlotte
The No Bad Vibes Tour Stops At Spectrum Center
Charlotte was all good vibes at Spectrum Center as contemporary country band Old Dominion made a stop in the Queen City. Hot off the heels of their newest single “Memory Lane,” Old Dominion has been on the road bringing their special brand of country music fused with plenty of pop and rock influences to the masses.
The crowd was still filtering in, but the pit area in front of the stage and surrounding the catwalks was already packed and hopping when Kylie Morgan made her appearance. A road warrior since the young age of 14, Morgan has been making big waves in the country music scene since the release of her 2022 EP P.S. Kylie strode onto the stage and quickly took control of the audience with her powerful vocals. She truly has a knack for songwriting, crafting vulnerable and poignant songs that speak to your soul. My first impression is that Morgan is a bright, young talent with a little combination of Loretta Lynn and Carrie Underwood happening. The fans loved her and she took the time to interact with a young girl in a pink cowboy hat and even grabbed a cellphone from someone to take a selfie. I expect that we will continue to see bigger things for Kylie Morgan in the not-so-distant future.
After a short break, it was time to start “Dancin’ in the Country” with Tyler Hubbard. Hubbard of course is best known as part of the country duo Florida Georgia Line for over a decade. After the duo went on hiatus in 2021, Hubbard launched a solo career of his own with the 2022 EP Dancin’ in the Country and this year his self-titled full-length debut. Hubbard and his talented band came out kicking things off with “Tough” as he made his way to the catwalk which jutted out at center stage. Dressed in jeans, a plain white tee, and a baseball cap worn backward, Hubbard looked the typical blue-collar man, but with a voice that would stop you dead in your tracks. His years in Florida Georgia Line made him into a terrific performer and he worked the stage from side to side, pointing and greeting the fans and giving high fives to the lucky ones up against the catwalk. His vocals were on point with songs that resonated. My favorite was “Back Then Right Now,” which had us all thinking back to our own past and wishing we could bring a little of those times to our present day. Of course, Hubbard closed things out with a true dance party as the pits were rocking. We may have been in the heart of the city, but at that moment, we were all “Dancin’ in the Country.”
It was already a party at Spectrum Center and the headliner hadn’t even started yet. The crowd was excited, anticipating a great set from Old Dominion and they certainly did not disappoint.
The No Bad Vibes Tour logo appeared on the screen at the rear of the stage amping up the excitement. People were pumped up and the beer was flowing. The lights dimmed and the band came out to a darkened stage with the rear screen lighting up “We,” then “Are,” and of course, finally “Old Dominion,” and we were off. Lead vocalist Matthew Ramsey made his way to the center microphone and proceeded to “Make It Sweet.” It was clear from the first moments of the set that the band was on fire and clicking on all cylinders.
The stage setup was simple yet extremely effective in showcasing the band and allowing them to interact with the audience. Drummer Whit Sellers was situated on a riser in the back flanked by bass guitarist Geoff Sprung on one side and a keyboard setup that rhythm guitarist Trevor Rosen would utilize at times during the evening. Rosen was up front to start, stage right, and lead guitarist Brad Tursi on the opposite side, stage left. A long catwalk jutted out from the center of the stage, coming to a huge T-shape at the end allowing for some up close and personal contact with the fans on the floor. At different intervals during the evening, band members would make their way down and perform at the end of the catwalk, going from one side of the T to the other much to the delight of the crowd.
The show was all about No Bad Vibes, bringing a joyous feeling to everyone in the venue. The setlist was long with Old Dominion performing 21 songs. One of the best things about the group is that they devote some time during each show to take requests and there were plenty. Fans all across the floor were holding up signs and shouting for their favorites. The band happily obliged with “All I Know About Girls” and “Beer Can in a Truck Bed.”
There was a lot of laughter and dancing especially when Matthew walked the catwalk holding up several room keys and shouting out the names of different hotels before settling on The Ritz-Carlton as a segue into “Hotel Key.” We all got a bit emotional during “Memory Lane” before we were treated to the blockbuster hit “One Man Band.” Last year, Old Dominion was opening for Kenny Chesney on his stadium tour so we even got a little Kenny cover with “Save It for a Rainy Day.” Of course, it wouldn’t be an Old Dominion show without shouts of “Boat!” and they gave us a rousing end to the night with a full-on boot-stomping, hand clapping, dance off to “I Was on a Boat That Day.”
What a show! There were absolutely No Bad Vibes in Charlotte tonight as Old Dominion brought the house down at Spectrum Center. There are still plenty of dates left on the tour so be sure and get your tickets for a night of good vibes and good times.
