Sippin’ Wine and Singin’ About Exes With Sunny Sweeney In Charlotte
Singer-Songwriter Plays Intimate Show at Neighborhood Theatre
Last year singer-songwriter Sunny Sweeney released her fifth studio album Married Alone which spent 20 weeks on the Top 10 Americana album charts. Sunny is out on the road supporting the new record and recently made a stop in Charlotte playing to an intimate crowd at the iconic Neighborhood Theatre.
Sunny took the stage clad in black, hat perched slightly askew atop her head, and dove right into an evening of music that would take us on an emotion-packed ride not only through her life but also our own. Sweeney’s vocals filled the venue, closing in around you like a hug from a long-lost friend and her band was definitely on fire.
The set wound seamlessly from song to song as Sunny filled in with poignant stories and life lessons along the way. She recalled a phone call from the legendary Loretta Lynn where she asked the country music star for advice. Ms. Lynn told her to write what you know and so we have songs about going through a divorce and lost loves as Sweeney shares her personal experiences in songs like “Easy as Hello” and “How’d I End up Lonely Again.”
We heard stories about her first apartment after divorce and how she met her elderly neighbor by blasting Tom Petty at 2 am. Sunny also talked about being on the road and how they play a certain song every night because the few times they didn’t play it, they had a bad accident traveling after the show. This was a real-life introduction to the beautiful “Poet’s Prayer.”
The night wasn’t all sad though because we had plenty of foot-stomping, toe-tapping tunes as well as Sunny had us all clapping and dancing along to the honky-tonking “Momma’s Wine.” It was a wonderful show and a great time was had by all. Do not miss this gem of an artist!
Opening the show was local artist Sydney Lett. Hailing from Statesville, NC, Lett was a breath of fresh air as she graced the stage full of excitement. Not only does she have a great set of pipes, but she is also a wonderful songwriter. The highlight of her set was a terrific cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.” Be sure and check her out as I’m sure we will be hearing a lot more from Sydney in the future.
