We The Kingdom Bring “Miracle Power” To Ovens Auditorium

Family Band Brings an Evening of Music, Praise, and Worship to Charlotte

A lot of musicians will say that being in a band is much like being a part of a family. You may argue and have disagreements, but at the end of the day, you find a way to make it work. For We The Kingdom, the band truly is a family affair. Not only are they one of the hottest acts in Contemporary Christian music, but they actually are family. We The Kingdom is comprised of brothers Ed and Scott Cash, Ed’s daughter Frannie and son Martin and close family friend Andrew Bergthold. It just doesn’t get much closer than that.

After the release of their second single, “Holy Water,” back in 2019, We The Kingdom has steadily been gaining ground in the world of music and in their mission of spreading God’s love throughout the country. In just a few short years as a musical unit, the band has garnered several GMA Dove Award nominations with two wins as well as two Grammy nominations and was named Top New Christian artist in 2020 by Billboard. The band spent the better part of the fall touring in support of their latest self-titled release and the top-charting single “Miracle Power” and we were lucky enough to catch their live show at Ovens Auditorium for an experience we will never forget.

Opening up the evening of music and praise was singer-songwriter, Cory Asbury. An accomplished musician in his own right, Asbury is a Dove award winner and Grammy nominee and has been recognized by Billboard, ASCAP, and BMI with Christian Song of the Year Honors for his break-out single “Reckless Love.”

Although Asbury’s set was short, it was powerful. His vocals resonated across the venue, pulling at your emotions as he sang the poignant “The Father’s House” and regaled us with stories of his own life and family, giving testimony of his own. Of course, his performance would not be complete without his biggest hit as Asbury obliged the audience with an outstanding live version of “Reckless Love.” Cory’s talents shined throughout the set and I’m certain he made a lot of new fans that night. He is definitely an artist worth checking out and adding to your regular playlist rotation.

After his set, there was a brief intermission during which a representative of local Charlotte radio station K-LOVE talked about a children’s charity and how sponsoring a child was something she grew up with and continues to this day with her own family. She talked about the impact it had on her life and how such a simple gesture can have a giant impact on the life of a child. For those who wished to sponsor a child of their own, volunteers were walking the aisles to collect information and make that happen. It’s great to see artists giving back in such a huge way and there was a lot of support from the audience as well.

Then, it was finally time for what everyone had been waiting for. The stage was set with a giant sun and rainbow at the rear of the stage which would change colors and lighting effects throughout the evening. Martin’s drumset was situated just beneath the sun and the backing vocalists to the rear of the stage. Front and center were vocalist Franni Cash along with Ed who would switch from guitar to keyboards to vocals,  Scott, and Andrew on the guitar. Sunflowers were everywhere, adorning microphone stands and setting a joyous vibe for the evening of music. The band came out and kicked off the evening with “Left It In The Water” which merged into a medley of cover tunes “Proud Mary” and “Johnny B. Goode.” Next, they got the theatre rocking with “Child of Love” during which confetti cannons went off like crazy. This was rock show-level confetti and I even saw stagehands pouring more and more confetti into the cannons. In fact, there was so much confetti, I could barely make out the band members at times. Things were definitely off to a fantastic start.

Red lights and flashing white lights washed the stage for “Don’t Tread On Me” which included a section of the Fleetwood Mac rocker “The Chain.” Okay, now I am officially impressed. The entire band is on fire, musically and vocally and the crowd is eating it up. People of all ages and backgrounds are coming together as one, letting the music take over and it is wonderful to be a part of it. Everyone was on their feet in a moment of worship and praise for “Jesus Does.”

It wasn’t much longer before we were taken on an incredible musical journey with a stellar performance of “Miracle Power.” The stage changed from bright lights to dark, illuminated by a blanket of stars at the rear which changed color before changing to blue and white lights and a spotlight shining on Franni for the finale of the song. Wow! Powerful is an understatement.

During the show, the band chatted a little with the audience recalling some of their earlier years when they were living in Charlotte and sharing their own stories and testimonies with the fans. In another beautiful moment, Franni, Ed, and Scott came to sit on the edge of the stage to play “Peace” and it was heavenly. Along with all the rocking and spiritual moments, there was a little comedic moment as well. All the band members came together in front of one microphone to do a sing-along to “Sing Wherever I Go,” including drummer Martin Cash, who apparently is the one member of the family that isn’t too sure of his vocal abilities. But, the audience clapped and cheered and got him to sing his part as well before the band ramped it up with a hand-clapping sing-along with the whole audience.

Then it was time for guitars, guitars, and more guitars as we all rocked out to “Holy Water” to close out the evening. But just when you thought We the kingdom couldn’t possibly have anything left to give, they came back out for an epic “Waking Up,” cueing even more confetti and cheers before the band took their final bow of the night.

This was a top-notch show in every way from the music to the stage show to the message. Every member of the band gave it their all and the result was an incredible night of music that none of us in attendance would ever forget. If you think that music with a message is boring, you’re wrong. If you’ve never experienced worship or praise music live and in person, open your mind and you’re heart and go see a show. It may end up being one of the best nights of your life.
