Holy Fvck! Demi Lovato Is Spectacular in Charlotte

The Holy Fvck Tour Rolls Into Charlotte Metro Credit Union Ampitheatre

Warning: This review contains excessive use of the word “fvck”

I hate to start off a review by repeating myself but “Holy Fvck” has Demi Lovato come a long way.  The former child actor (cue the Barney theme song)  and Disney Channel alum is all grown up and rocking it out. Lovato has released her hardest-hitting album yet with Holy Fvck, returning to her pop-punk influences and writing an all-out rocker. The singer has been out on the road in support of the new record and recently made a stop here in the Queen City at the Charlotte Metro Credit Union Ampitheatre.

I went into this show not knowing at all what to expect and that turned out to be a good thing in this case. Opening up the evening was rock band Dead Sara who is probably best known for their 2012 breakout hit “Weatherman” from their debut album.  This is a band that has been on my radar for years but this was my first chance to catch them live and I am so glad I did. Dead Sara was amazing! Led by lead vocalist Emily Armstrong, the band was full of energy. In fact, Emily went non-stop for their whole set. One minute she was running across the stage, the next she was treating her microphone cord like a cowboy trying to wrangle a bull, and then she would go flying off the drum riser leaping to the stage, all without missing a note. Impressive! If you get the chance to catch them out on tour, do so!

“Like a serpent in the garden

I am truth and I am darkness

I’m an angel, I’m a demon

Just depends on what you’re feeling

I’m the fruit that was forbidden

But don’t keep my evil hidden

I’m the one she was afraid of

Now I’m what your dreams are made of…”

During the set change, the energy level was abuzz and the fans were ready for Demi. When the stage lights went dark, the crowd got to their feet screaming “Demi! Demi!” and we were off. Lovato opened the show by revealing a stage awash with red lights and a string-art-style backdrop as a spotlight shone upon her and the band kicked off with the title track from her newest record. Soon we were all singing “I’m a holy fvck!” Demi was gorgeous in her leather and chains as she led her all-female band through “Freak” and “Eat Me.” This is definitely not the little Demi from her younger years. She is all grown up and hardcore kicking ass.

Confident: adjective

having strong belief or full assurance; sure:

confident of fulfillment.

sure of oneself; having no uncertainty about one’s own abilities, correctness, successfulness, etc.; self-confident; bold:

a confident speaker.

The powerful “Confident” was a statement song for Lovato and indeed she is absolutely confident once she hits that stage. Regardless of her past issues and what the latest gossip may be, Demi is a confident performer and the fans were eating it up. Though her voice gave out a little on the poignant live version of “Skyscraper,” nobody seemed to care because we were all caught up in the moment and what it meant to us individually.  That was the one song where she may have stumbled a bit due to the chilly night air but for the most part, Demi sounded fantastic as did her band. Guitarist Nita Strauss was on fire and is a great addition to Lovato’s talented group of musicians.

Lovato gave fans a little of everything with a few covers thrown in among her hits as well as plenty of material from the Holy Fvck album. For any of you that may have doubts about Lovato, I can tell you from first-hand experience that she put on a phenomenal performance and I’m sure those in attendance would agree.

After a two-song encore, I made my way out of the venue, feeling immensely satisfied and yes more “Confident” than ever before. Look out world Demi is back with a vengeance and “Holy Fvck” is she going to blow your mind.
