It was said during the show but I feel it’s also worth starting this article by saying it… ‘The Hardest Part’, the debut album by Noah Cyrus “was made to be heard live” and I couldn’t agree more. What’s up everyone, it’s Derek, a.k.a. The Photographic Ginger here! I’m back again with another night of music in Washington, DC. Now normally someone would write to make you wait to get the final verdict on a show but I’m just going to tell you right here and now that Noah’s discography has been on constant repeat since this show because it was that damn good.

Cyrus not only knows how to put on a show but her vocals, powerful and personal songs along with her accompanying band are absolutely incredible in a live setting. So continue reading but if you’ve been trying to decide whether or not to buy tickets to the tour… Do it!!

Now let’s get into it, shall we. On this evening in DC it was an early show at the famous 9:30 Club and upon arriving and doors opening at 6pm there was already a line of fans around the block.

All eager to witness the talent of the youngest Cyrus siblings, but make no mistake, Noah has made a lane of her own. As she leans into her personal life and channels the emotions and experience that occur.

Her vulnerability in songwriting also carries through to her vocal performance making for a truly incredible combination that can be taught. Along with her on this tour is another artist that creates her work from a similar space. gigi.

gigi is a NYC-based indie singer-songwriter who makes “organic, acoustically-driven music and highlights some clever lyricism and immersive storytelling.” Her set and vocals introduce an ethereal sound that very obviously comes from a genuine place.

Songs like “Sometimes (Backwood)”, a song that also brought her into the spotlight in 2021 as it went viral. But if there’s one song that we’d consider the most personal and vulnerable of hers it’s her latest single “Glue”.

A song that she explains was written two months after the passing of her oldest sister and a recent relationship ending in the same time. A song of reflection and self discovery.

She’s an artist you’ll certainly want to keep on your radar. As she ended her set she told us “get ready for Noah fu*king Cyrus” and we did as the crowd let out a loud cheer.

The time had then finally come. The crowd was ready, the room and stage were glowing orange as a haze filled the air and camera crews took their place (oh yea, the show was being filled so keep an eye out for what project that may bring) it was time to begin. As she walked upon the stage dressed elegantly in all black the crowd went wild, screaming with excitement. Beginning the set and the evening fittingly was the first track off her debut album with “Noah (Stand Still)”. A song that speaks of facing hardships and uncertainty but with the advice of her father Billy Ray to stand still. A song that began to grow and beautifully brought the stage and room to life. Shortly after were performances of two of my favorites with “Mr. Percocet” and “Unfinished” the latter of which has recently been released as a single in an acoustic format and is absolutely flawless.

Following that was a blend of two songs, a tell of two sides if you will, with two songs from her EP collab with P.J. Harding ‘People Don’t Change’. Those two songs being “The Best Of You” and “The Worst Of You”. A little after that was another song that when I first heard two years I knew was the work of pure genius, that being a song that tells the struggles of a relationship that you know isn’t right but feels so hard to let go with “All Three”.

A song that truly shows the vocal range of this talented artist. Speaking of relationships though, Cyrus then went on to share a personal story about a part relationship in which originally was written from one perspective but then after she began to realize that unconsciously it was from her own struggles. As a single spotlight shined upon her, she began to sing “My Side of the Bed”.

The evening also gave space to highlight her EP ‘THE END OF EVERYTHING’ including the song that perhaps solidified her space as a songwriter and singer with “I Got So High That I Saw Jesus”. As it began a sea of phones washed over the room in an effort to capture the magic.

While she’s been touring, she recently was at ACL and got the chance to see one of her favorite bands for the first time live The Chicks so seeing as they’re performing every night it was only right they took the chance to perform a cover of “Cowboy Take Me Away”. A beautiful nod to some badass “chicks”.

As songwriting from a personal space is something Cyrus excels at, many of the evenings songs proved that but perhaps none better than “Again” and “Loretta’s Song”. She dedicated “Again” to the artist featured on the track with her, the late XXXTENACTION as strobe lights paired with the beat and vocals created an energetic and emotional moment.

Again, showing her diversity, on the other side of spectrum “Loretta’s Song” paid tribute to her “mawmaw Ruthie” who passed away in August. It’s a song that feels of an old church hymn which was fittingly followed by a short rendition of “I’ll Fly Away”.

While the night continued on it was time to showcase her biggest songs to date. One of which being the first single released for this debut album with “I Burned LA Down”. Followed by the title track to the album with “The Hardest Part”. Then the song that has reached far and wide and become her most well known with “July” which closed out the set with incredible power.

But it was an encore that the fans craved. The applause and passion roared through the building and prompted Cyrus and the band to return for a few more songs. One of those songs being the one that launched her career and was the first song she ever released with “Make Me (Cry)” all before ending the night with a song whose title and lyrics are perfectly designed to close a set as she sang “The End of Everything”.
